4-star general rank promotion for African American Marine

It was a historic day for the African American black community as Gen. Michael E. Langley became the first African American Four-Star general in the history of the Marine Corps.

Upon the recipient of the award, Gen. Michael E. Langley, gave all the plaudits to his father for nurturing him and telling him to be the best and aim high. He mentioned that his promotion wil help spur the next generation and inspire them to be better people.

Langley was raised on military bases thanks to his father being an AirForce officer. He had an early exposure to military life. Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Gen. Michael E. Langley received his degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and joined the Marines in 1985 as a second lieutenant.

At the promotion ceremony, Langley could not hold back his excitement, and gratitude. “My father urged me to always aim high and be my best, and I did that. I aimed so high to achieve this,” Langley said during the ceremony at Marine Corps Barracks Washington. In attendance was his father, family members and friends.

The Marine Corps, which dates back to 1775, initially opposed letting Black men into its ranks. But the events at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii in 1941 as well as the US involvement in World War 2, paved the way for the inclusion of Black men into the corps. Following the directive of President Harry Truman’s in 1948, the american armed services was desegregated. 30 years later, the first african american marine received a one-star general promotion in 1979

Joe Biden had proposed Langley for appointment to the rank of general, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in June. The job of commander of the U.S. Africa Command, stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, came along with the promotion. On Monday, the Senate approved his appointment.

During the event on Saturday, Langley reportedly said, "The milestone and what it signifies to the Corps is pretty critical." Not because of the historical significance, but rather because of how it will impact future generations, particularly the young people in society who want to aspirationally join the Marine Corps.
